How representation matters: comparing collaborative learning with alternative versions of hypermedia
نویسندگان
چکیده
The goal of this comparative case study is to investigate how students collaboratively learn about complex systems with hypermedia. This study also investigates how the conceptual representation underlying the hypermedia influences students’ collaborative activities and knowledge co-construction. We use two different types of hypermedia to study the human respiratory system. One version of the hypermedia highlights the structural and the second version the functional-behavioral aspects of the human respiratory system. An in-depth analysis of two dyads, working on two versions of the hypermedia, will be presented in this paper.

Students' construction of scientific explanations in a collaborative hyper-media learning environment
This exploratory study examined how elementary school students make use of a collaborative hypermedia learning environment in constructing scientific explanations. The target environment was a computer-networked database system in which students externalize their thoughts in the form of texts or graphics, then elaborate their thoughts by structuring with links or by commenting. Thirty students ...
متن کاملEffects of Conceptual Representation on Learning from Hypermedia
Studying complex systems is increasingly important in many domains. Several features shared by complex systems hinder deep understanding. For example, understanding complex systems involves thinking about multiple interdependent levels, non-linear causality and/or emergence. Conceptual representations offer opportunities to become integrating frameworks across different domains. This study inve...

متن کاملLearning with Educational Hypermedia Software: The Impact of Signals in Animations
The present study investigated the instructional value of signals for learning while comparing two animations that differed solely in the presence / absence of visual signals. Signals consisted of highlighted elements and visualization of technical terms. Both animations were implemented within complex and professional hypermedia e-learning software on cell biology leading to two evaluation ver...
متن کاملSupporting Problem based Learning by a Collaborative Virtual Environment: A Cooperative Hypermedia Approach
Problem based learning promotes engagement in meaningful learning and cooperation among students. When applying PBL in distributed groups distance has to be bridged by means of technology. Collaborative virtual environments (CVE) can help to overcome two crucial problems of PBL, if used in a distributed learning situation: Firstly, learners have problems to understand, interact with, and tailor...
